Cummins Engine Repair Easy Maintenance

It is inevitable that the engine will fail during use, timely repair can not only extend the service life of the engine, but also improve work efficiency, this article will introduce you when the Cummins engine makes abnormal noise, how to carry out Cummins Engine Repair.

Inspection methods and standard parameters when the Cummins engine makes abnormal noises:

1. Disconnect engine accessories: First, you need to disconnect all non-essential accessories on the engine, including but not limited to generators, air conditioning compressors, fans, intake lines, and exhaust lines. Then start the engine and listen carefully for any abnormal noises. This step is to rule out possible interference from other accessories and thus locate the source of the squeak and screak more accurately.

2. Fuel supply system inspection: When checking the fuel supply system, the fuel resistance needs to be tested before and after the filter. Under normal circumstances, the fuel resistance in front of the filter should not be greater than 20kPa, and the fuel resistance after the filter should not exceed 30kPa. This step helps to determine if there is a blockage or leak in the fuel supply system.

3. Accessories inspection: Conduct a comprehensive inspection of accessories such as belt tensioners, air compressors, air conditioning compressors, fans and their hubs to ensure that they run smoothly and have no abnormal wear or looseness. The anomalous state of these appendages is often also a potential source of squeaky noises.

4. Pressure test after intercooling: Conduct pressure test after intercooling when the vehicle is in situ and the engine is in high idle state. Before the test, it is necessary to ensure that the coolant temperature is not lower than 60°C, that is, the hot car state. The pressure values obtained by the test should be in the range of 17-21kPa, beyond which it may indicate a problem with the intercooling system.

5. Exhaust back pressure detection: The detection of exhaust back pressure needs to be distinguished according to whether the exhaust system is equipped with an exhaust butterfly valve device. For the exhaust system without exhaust butterfly valve device, the maximum exhaust back pressure should be less than or equal to 10kPa; For the exhaust system with exhaust butterfly valve device, the maximum exhaust back pressure in front of the exhaust butterfly valve should be less than or equal to 450kPa. The test is carried out using a pressure module and a multimeter, and is carried out under the working condition of climbing the whole vehicle with full load or using the exhaust butterfly valve for a long downhill.

Cummins engine abnormal noise can be caused by a variety of reasons, here are some possible causes and corresponding solutions:

1. Shock absorber or flywheel dynamic balance problems. Check that the bolts are loose and replace the damaged shock absorbers or flywheels.

2. The piston ring is cracked or worn. Remove the exhaust manifold, inspect for moisture or carbon buildup, and repair or replace it.

3. The bearing clearance is wrong. Check the bearing clearance and replace the qualified bearing.

4. The axial clearance of the crankshaft is unqualified. Replace thrust rings, or repair crankshafts.

5. The cylinder liner or piston is worn or abrased. Check and measure according to the standard, repair or replace.

6. Foreign matter enters the engine system. Pay attention to the cleaning of the mouth of the oil drum, and apply oil to the filter seal during installation to ensure that the seal is not damaged. For example, in one case, the abnormal noise was caused by a small piece of paper in the oil channel of the cooling nozzle, resulting in the piston not being effectively and fully cooled, and the cylinder pulling and squeak failure occurred.

In order to ensure the stable operation and prolonged service life of Cummins engines, regular maintenance and inspections are recommended. Once abnormal conditions such as abnormal noises are found, professional diagnosis and maintenance should be carried out immediately. By following the inspection methods and handling steps above, you can more effectively address squeak and squeak issues on your Cummins engine, ensuring that it is always in top working order.
